A spate of shocking and seemingly bizarre recent thefts has highlighted the boom in the price for scrap metal and the vast sums available to those who can get their hands on it.

Police forces up and down the country have been inundated by reports of increasingly desperate attempts to cash in on the recent rises in the prices of many metals.  In addition to a rise in vehicle thefts, police have also have had to contend with thieves removing rail and overhead cables from train tracks, metal roofing from churches, and even manhole covers.

In one of the more shocking raids, metal tiles protecting the 100 year-old Barr Beacon War Memorial in Walsall were taken by thieves seeking a quick buck.

This has all come on the back of month on month price rises in many metals, which have continued to rise with signs of a recovery both here in Europe and across the Atlantic. To add to this, industrial expansion in Asian has given no indication of slowing, meaning demand has begun to outstrip supply.

Despite the thefts, the metal price rises are not all bad news. The coffers of the charities supported by are scheme are also starting to feel the benefit too.

According to Lets Recycle, the main component of a car, Light Iron, grew by almost 25% between December 2010 and January 2011. With this astronomic rise, the amount donated for each car we receive has also increased. So now really is the best time to donate your car!

We have all seen in the news recently the current state of The Irish economy which has fallen into recession for the first time since the 1980s. This has caused a great crisis in consumer confidence. Since the global economic downturn in 2008 the price of the pound has fallen but the transactions demand for money remain constant and above that in Ireland. As a result, the low level of business activity, gross domestic product (GDP) and high levels of unemployment which are affecting the Irish Economy are in turn helping to preserve momentum in the economy in the UK.

The authorities want to preserve this momentum even further this year and have been encouraging stability in key industries such as the car manufacturing industry with funds for scrappage schemes with certain car manufacturers. The question posed however of how much the authorities’ conservative trend towards funding the car manufacturing industry combined with the trend to export less will help Giveacar to increase charitable donations remains.

Some of the most popular brands of car in the UK outsource their production across Europe and the trend towards consumer environmental awareness combined with decreased consumer confidence may improve the popularity of certain cars as they will be able to be marketed against a backdrop of the authorities latest car recycling trend. When consumers continually remember the environmental associations with their cars on a grander scale the task of ‘building green’ will be more effective in the UK.

We recycle 85% of a scrap car in line with the authorities’ current directives and aim to remove some of the one million cars on the UK roads that are not disposed of in the correct way. If the generosity of our donors continues we predict that not only can we help save the planet but we can also help to better inform the public about the environmental decisions they make.

Researchers at the University of Michigan found that the program improved the average fuel economy of all vehicles purchased by 0.6 mpg in July 2009 and by 0.7 mpg in August 2009 alone. Whilst we have a scheme on a smaller scale in the UK it is clear that the benefits to the environment are substantial from recycling cars and can really make a big difference given the usually high level of consumption of new cars.

We have all heard of hurricane Ike but did we associate it with a trend in car consumption? I have often thought about buying a new car and realised how much easier it is to buy a new car than to get rid of an old one. Recycling your car as an alternative however, really should be no cause for concern. We save you the hassle of having to advertise the sale of your car and collect any car regardless of its condition. In a time of austerity the donations from car recycling are a much needed boost for the charity industry and a gift in kind is valuable to those who do not enjoy plenty at Christmas time.

Give a recording studo?

By admin

Tomorrow morning we put up for auction possibly the strangest vehicle we have ever received. In fact I’m not sure you could even call it a vehicle. What we’ll be auctioning is an artic trailer that has been converted into a recording studio! Unfortunately it doesn’t have all of its recording equipment left, though it still has a fair amount hanging around. In addition it has a tasteful wooden ceiling with inset lights, a sofa and a sink. In effect it’s a mobile studio flat....

This raises a couple of questions; the first is who would make something like that? The answer is Fleetwood Mobile, a company who rent out their mobile recording studios to bands. You can learn more about them here. The second question you might be asking is who would buy a thing like that? Well, that’s something you’re going to have to wait to find out. All I would say is that whoever does will, almost by definition, be an interesting character!

But if anyone else has anything, interesting, to donate to Giveacar then you’re welcome to call us. We can’t promise that we can take it, but we like a challenge.

Students and Giveacar

By admin

Here at Giveacar we receive a fair few cars from students looking to dispose of the old banger they brought to get them through uni. It’s perhaps unsurprising that students would be one of our more productive demographics, after all few can afford to buy a new or even a second hand car and they are often inclined to charity....

Here at Giveacar we receive a fair few cars from students looking to dispose of the old banger they brought to get them through uni. It’s perhaps unsurprising that students would be one of our more productive demographics, after all few can afford to buy a new or even a second hand car and they are often inclined to charity.

And Giveacar offers a solution to students facing the problem of how to get rid of that car once they can get a better one or move to a city where they don’t need or can’t afford one. Certainly when it came to moving to London I suddenly found myself with a car that I simply wasn’t going to use. I didn’t want to pay insurance, tax and storage for it, so what I could I do? Well I didn’t know about Giveacar then, so I tried to sell and soon realised I would only get scrap value, and so I looked up some scrap companies and managed to get £50 for it. Or about two nights of post exam partying!

Of course had I but known, I could not only have donated to charity, but also avoided a massive hangover! The point here is of a course that using Giveacar can provide students with a quick, environmental and ethical way to get rid of cars that are going from liberating to restricting, and of course to raise some money for their favourite charity.

Whilst here at Giveacar we are all about car donation and recycling we thought it might be interesting look at other ways in which you can donate by recycling your old goods. So what did a quick and very cautious google turn up?

One of the first things that emerged was ‘donate your PC’. This contrasts with car donation in that rather than selling the PC and donating the proceeds the charity actually gets your old computer. Of course it isn’t just PC’s that this applies to you can also donate Macs. However there are a couple of important things to bear in mind if you do decide to do this. The first is to wipe all of the data off it. Yes all of it. This means than any unscrupulous individuals can’t use the data against you. (Of course there aren’t any unscrupulous individuals working for charities, but better safe than sorry.) The second thing to do is make sure it all works, after all there is no point giving a charity a lump of metal and plastic. (Us on the other hand…)

Another method that is similar to car donation, but much smaller, is to donate you mobile. Charities such as Water Aid and Refuge will happily accept your old handset and recycle it, doing so gains them between £3 and £5 per a handset. Not only does your phone give money to Charity in this way but by doing so it also helps the environment as your handset has many different toxic chemicals in it.

The last and classic way is by donating your old clothes, books and cds/dvds to charity shops.  Of course I don’t need to tell you about this as I’m sure you all do it anyway. But it’s always worth remembering. Particularly when you find yourself overwhelmed by all your old purchases!

Recent trends in the car manufacturing industry indicate a recognition of the regulations by the government of 2006 that state that 85% of scrap cars must be recycled and taken to a scrap yard or Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF). This means that only the correct methods of car disposal that are environmentally friendly and will contribute to the reduction of the carbon footprint are promoted in the UK for the removal and destruction of end-of-life cars.

The new Ford is unlike the models of the 1950s when the bumpers were made of steel, even though the chassis of the new models are still made of metal. Ford’s CEO Bill Ford has devised a new scheme for the company this year whereby in addition to the usual car parts that have been recycled for years, both sustainable raw materials and recycled materials have been added to car components.

The environmental impact of building the new Ford car is almost negligible and the fact that it is not just the use of recyclable materials, nor making the end product recyclable as a whole that is recognised to be important is having an effect on current trend in the car industry. It is recognised that making the entire process environmentally friendly is key to success at reducing environmental pollution from motor vehicles. For instance, all of the electronic boards in today's cars leave a tremendous toxic trail in 3rd world countries both when they are made and when (if at all) they are recycled. The emphasis is slowly from recycling to simply "conservation", which is not just recycling, but also repairing and reusing scrap cars wherever possible is one that is beginning to take hold in the UK.

Far from adhering to a typical understanding that is limited to regarding only new ‘green’ vehicles as of any use towards the cause of saving the environment, and consequently that a full replacement of a vehicle with a new ‘green’ one is the only viable option is beginning to register with drivers in the UK. To overlook the fact that the energy and resources that are needed to both build a new vehicle and recycle the old one would be higher than those produced by the running of an old model of car in its current condition is nonsensical and not supported by the new Ford car models such as the Flex and Escape.

Many motorists facing the challenge today of organising the removal of their end-of-life vehicles may want to consider some of the schemes aimed at recycling the scrap of a car and giving the proceeds to charity. In such tough economic times such an option enables motorists to support charities and scrap their end-of-life car. This alternative can provide an option for motorists who may not yet realise that their car may be of some value, even if it is not able to be sold as a used car. Many individuals will purchase a scrap car so that they can renovate it and some technical colleges that teach mechanics may want to purchase scrap cars in order to facilitate their teaching course.

Working in Africa this charity provides children with sporting lessons and equipment. The empowerment of young people in this way sees improvements in many aspects of life for poor South Africans including better education and confidence amongst youth.

And last but not least the most popular amongst car donors was Cancer Research UK.  Cancer Research aims to save lives by researching cancer to this end they fund research. According to a report from Giveonthemobile 13% of people plan to reduce charitable donations in 2011 and a further 14% plan on not giving anything at all. In contrast only 4% plan on increasing their donations.

Whilst obviously this report is worrying for charities there may be some opportunities in investigating alternative forms of fundraising. The obvious example for us is of course by donating things other than money. Whilst a quick google search reveals that as well as your old car you can donate unwanted mobiles, computers and even bras!

The advantages of donating items are many. First it often doesn’t cost the donor anything, sometimes it may even save them money in storage or disposal. Those costs it does incur will be largely postage and packaging.

The second is that donating these items provides an ecological way to get dispose of them. After all there is little money to be made by throwing things into landfill! Instead depending on who you donate to these items can either be redistributed, sold or broken down for parts.

Unfortunately this seems to be an area in the UK is behind other countries such as the US. But with social enterprises such as Giveacar we maybe on our way to catching up.
